How long do resin floors really last? (And what makes the difference?)

Are you experiencing floor failures after just 2–3 years, when they were intended to last much longer?

If you’ve had to sign off on spot repairs or repainting more times than you’d like, you’re not alone. This is the day-to-day reality of facilities or site managers up and down the UK.

To cut through sales talk and give you a straight answer to how long resin floors last – and what makes or breaks their lifespan – the industrial flooring experts at Quest Flooring reveal all.

How long does an epoxy floor last?

For the most part, the resin floor lifespan is around 5 – 20 years, depending on the system chosen, the maintenance it receives, and the installation process itself.

Resin flooring type

Suggested use

Expected lifespan

Epoxy Lighter-duty environments, including schools, offices, and warehouses 5 – 10 years
Polyurethane Heavy-duty sites, including commercial freezers, food production, or environments that handle chemicals 10 – 20 years
MMA/fast-cure systems Retail fit-outs and environments that need a quick turnaround 5 – 8 years

The exact lifespan of resin flooring can differ depending on the type of resin you choose. For this reason, it’s essential that you choose the right type of FeRFA resin flooring for your environment – our friendly team can advise if you aren’t sure which is right for you.

What affects the lifespan of resin flooring?

A simple rule of thumb is that the right resin system and proper preparation will ensure the maximum possible lifespan of your resin floor.

However, any of the following factors can negatively impact the epoxy floor lifespan, UK-wide – so be sure to avoid them if you want to keep replacing the floor off your to-do list:

  • Ignoring your traffic levels – if your site regularly uses forklifts or trolleys and has very high footfall, you’ll need a higher rather than lower FeRFA-rated flooring type to ensure it lasts as long as expected.
  • Exposing your flooring to chemicals and harsh hygiene requirements – if your space handles food processing or pharmaceuticals, or regularly has spills of abrasive or corrosive substances, you’ll need to choose a compatible resin flooring type.
  • Not planning for vast temperature extremes, this includes floors found in freezers, freestanding ovens, or hot washdowns.
  • Improper maintenance practices – while all industrial flooring should be cleaned regularly, the regimes and chemicals you use should be gentle and non-abrasive to ensure the flooring is unaffected.
  • Choosing a low-quality or inexperienced installer – while it can be tempting to try other industrial flooring providers to save money, preparation quality is integral to the polyurethane flooring’s durability. Some say as much as 70% of success is in the prep!
