If you’ve been looking into a range of different flooring materials recommended for use in commercial or industrial projects, it’s likely that you’ve come across resin flooring.
Resin surfaces are highly resilient and durable and, with their versatility of finish and look, can be suitable for almost any use – from a polished retail outlet floor to more heavy duty industrial environments requiring vehicular access and machinery use.
So, what is resin flooring – and could it be suitable for your premises or project? Read on to find out.
What is Industrial Resin Flooring?
The term “resin flooring” can be used to describe anything from screed and flowable flooring to a relatively thin layer of floor seal or coating, depending on requirements.
It is designed to create a durable, seamless surface with an extensive range of available finishes. Because the resin is usually poured into place, it’s extremely quick to install – making it a very practical choice for quick construction projects.
Types of Resin Flooring
The resin used in these surfaces is usually either epoxy, polyurethane or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).
The precise type of material used, and the way in which it is applied, depends heavily on the performance requirements of the flooring in question.
A simple floor seal – which is a layer of resin over another type of flooring – simply makes cleaning and dust-proofing easier and creates an attractive, uniform finish that can be either matte or glossy.
Thicker layers of flooring – and multi-layers – are usually applied in heavier-duty environments due to its resistance to impact and wear and tear as well as inbuilt protection against harmful chemicals.
Screeds and flow-applied flooring are the most robust. Many of these systems can be filled with aggregates for greater durability.
Almost every type of industrial resin flooring can be created in the colour and finish of your choice. Gloss finishes are often preferred in retail environments due to their aesthetic, but matte options may be used to prevent slipping.
Depending on the type of flooring you have chosen, certain varieties can last for up to 12 years as long as they are properly maintained.
