If you want a high-quality finish on your polished concrete flooring and epoxy resin flooring, then you first need to prepare the ground before installation.
As a UK-leading specialist, here at Quest Flooring, we provide floor preparation both as a stand-alone provision and as part of our industrial flooring packages.
Let’s take a look at how you should prepare the floor prior to polished concrete and epoxy resin flooring being laid and why it is important.
The importance of high-quality floor preparation
It’s preferable to have high-tech equipment to remove dirt and dust, and also level the surface where a polished concrete or an epoxy resin flooring is going to be installed.
Definitely the most important part of the flooring laying process, high-quality floor preparation means that industrial flooring can ultimately be laid evenly and without any bubbling or peeling.
All contaminants are mechanically cleaned away and state-of-the-art machinery should be used to smooth and level the surface. High-quality floor preparation equals a strong and aesthetically pleasing final result.
No matter what the size of the project, you should always take the time to prepare the floor. Here are a couple of floor preparation methods that you can consider:
-
HTC diamond grinding
At Quest Flooring, we use this revolutionary process to clean a floor prior to concrete polished flooring and epoxy resin flooring being laid. The four counter rotating diametrically opposed heads provide unbeatable results.
They are used with HTC vacuum sets to deliver a low noise, low vibration and dustless solution. This is a superb option if you want to install a thin epoxy resin flooring
-
shot blasting
Another favourite at Quest Flooring, shot blasting is a dust-free method, which fires abrasive steel ball bearings at the surface and etches away any contaminants that may impact the smooth laying of polished concrete or epoxy resin flooring.
Using an enclosed piece of equipment designed for abrasive blasting for preparing stone and concrete surfaces, this cold work process modifies a floor surface, leaving it level and smooth, ready for the flooring of your choice.
Here’s a more detailed look at what you need to do to prepare your floors before the application of polished concrete flooring and epoxy resin flooring:
Polished concrete flooring
If preparing a floor in readiness of a polished concrete flooring to be laid, the best thing to do is:
- prepare the area by cleaning all debris away
- repair any cracks or holes
- polish the floor with a coarse grit abrasive disc – as mentioned above
- move to using a fine grit abrasive disc
- finally use an extra-fine grit abrasive disc
- apply a coat of concrete floor polish
Epoxy resin flooring
Before applying a layer of epoxy resin, you will need to:
- etch (or concrete surface profiling – CSP), acid wash or grind the floor – a smooth floor will not allow the epoxy to bond and attach properly
- ensure the floor is clean, dry and sanded, free of any oil, mould, or grease by using acetone or other appropriate solvents
- allow new slabs of concrete, put down prior to the laying of an industrial floor to fully cure for 30 – 60 days
Cost
With floor preparation being the most important part of the laying of any industrial floor, whether it be a polished concrete for epoxy resin flooring, costs can become a bit of a concern.
At Quest, we understand this and as such, we offer competitive pricing on our floor preparation services.
